I had the idea of moving to Australia initially for a year to work as a GP and I came across Prospect Health. Once I made the decision to go ahead with the plan to work in Australia I was guided though the somewhat daunting series of steps required from initial identification requirements, to the registration process with AMC, RACGP, AHPRA etc. and I was able to keep in frequent contact whenever needed. I was also helped with the final steps of getting a provider number and tax file number / ABN / GST numbers which are needed before starting work.
I am working in a medical centre in South Australia and am finding it an enjoyable place to work, working with a mixture of walk in patients and some who are becoming more familiar. I see mostly patients on a “first available doctor” basis but do have a limited number of pre-bookable appointments. I have immediate access to XR, CT, radiology including interventional radiology on site, and enjoy undertaking procedures in the treatment room such as suturing.
I find that working full time with a reasonable number of out of hours consults generates an income that compares favourably to a full time salaried job in the U.K. Income can be higher for more established GPs who have a regular group of patients and are billing higher value items more frequently. There is less paperwork here – mainly referrals, results and letters. Medical indemnity is also inexpensive.
I would recommend Prospect Health for anyone thinking of working in Australia as they will guide you through the process from initial interest to getting set up and started with the job. I have found my employer has been supportive with getting me orientated to the system from the start.”
